An award-winning singer is set to return to Maldon for the last afternoon at the Proms.

John Pierce, known as ‘The Singing Painter’, will make a special guest appearance at All Saints’ Church for Maldon Choral’s event on Saturday.

He shot to fame after competing in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.

John, born in Wales, has been a part of the community in Maldon after stepping in to save a concert at the United Reformed Church in Market Hill while there painting it with his father-in-law.

The programme of songs will see a host of well known pieces performed throughout the afternoon.

Many of the pieces are commonly performed at the Last Night of The Proms, including Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and Fantasia on British Sea Songs, as well as Jerusalem.

A spokesman for Maldon Choral said: “John will be the soloist for this concert conducted by Gillian Ward Russell.

“By no means all the pieces in the concert are associated with The Last Night; Zadok the Priest and I Was Glad are famous for their inclusion in coronation services, while Better is Peace from Karl Jenkins’ phenomenally successful Mass for Peace – The Armed Man provides a strong counterweight to the lighter pieces in this poignant month commemorating the end of the Great War.”

The concert is the first of three planned by Maldon Choral before Christmas.

The other two performances will take place in Maldon and Purleigh on December 15 and 20.

Tickets will be £12 in advance and £14 on the door.
