A PRIMARY school in Maldon has created a stunning memorial for the hundred year commemoration of the First World War.

Pupils at Wentworth Primary School in Viking Road made poppies made out of the bottoms of plastic bottles.

The poppies were then displayed on a board near the entrance of the school.

There is also a small display at the garden inside the school which includes a board that reads ‘We will remember them’.

Teacher Kelly Gilbert-Bryan coordinated the whole school art memorial which was completed this week.

She said: “Every child at the school made a poppy to commemorate one hundred years since the first world war.

“The children have been learning the importance of reusing and recycling and wanted to reflect this in a whole school project.

“We collected plastic bottles, cut them to the shape of a poppy and then painted them.

“The plastic bottle poppies were arranged together to create a memorial for children, parents and the wider community to view.”

The school was also visited by historian Stephen Nunn who gave a talk about some of the town’s history during the war.

Headteacher Dawn Dack added: “Every child has bought in a bottle and they have painted their bottles.

“We’re going to go to the war memorial on the eleventh and that’s very important for them.

“It’s important that they don’t forget and they remember that wars still happen and children and civilians still get hurt.”
