VOLUNTEERS are needed to twine thousands of poppies for a First World War tribute.

A drape of 5,000 poppies is to be created and hung up from the Moot Hall in High Street, Maldon.

Members have been asked to help in the attaching of regular plastic poppies to some netting that will go onto the outside of the building.

The project was thought up by the Maldon Town Council and the Maldon Flower Arrangement club.

A spokesman for the council said: “When the council was thinking about how to make a nice commemoration for November, we were approached by the club.

“They had the idea of attaching the poppies to netting and hanging it outside the Moot Hall.

“I think it will be brilliant.”

Sessions for the community project start on Wednesday, September 26.

From there, volunteers may show up on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm to help out until October 17.
