A SERIES of award winning movies are set to be shown when a film club returns.

Maldon Film Club will open its doors for its 14th season from Tuesday.

The regular venue at Maldon Town Hall in Market Hill will have refreshments available from 7.30pm and the film begins at 8pm.

Films will include The Mercy, which was partly filmed in Maldon, The Florida Project and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.

The new season begins with the screening of the Oscar-nominated Lady Bird.

The film is set in 2002 amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape and Christine, played by Saoirse Ronan, is a high school senior from the “wrong side of the tracks”.

She longs for adventure, sophistication and opportunity but finds none of that in her Sacramento Catholic High School.

Ladybird’s home life is full of tension with her loving yet deeply opinionated mother.

Greta Gerwig, in her directorial debut, manages to balance humour and pathos when telling the story of a turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter.

Other films to be shown include A Man Called Ove, Journey’s End, A Fantastic Woman, My Feral Heart, Finding your Feet, Jules et Jim, The Shape of Water, In Between and Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.

The season continues until May 29 next year with films being shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2018 and Wednesdays in 2019.

The club works on a membership basis and is run by a committee that selects and screens an annual programme of 18 films from the best of recent English and foreign language releases plus one “classic”.

Annual subscription costs £25 for adults and guests are welcome for £3 per film.

In addition, there are a limited number of places for junior members aged 16 to 18 in full time education and training at the reduced cost of £18.
