Tributes have been paid to a former Bishop of Bradwell.

The Right Reverend Derek Bond, who served in Bradwell from 1976 to 1993, has died aged 91.

The Rev Bond was also an honorary assistant bishop for the Diocese of Chelmsford.

When he was appointed to the bishop position in Bradwell, he became the third person to take on the role.

Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford, has paid tribute to the Rev Bond.

He said: “Bishop Derek was easy to talk to, caring and hospitable.

"He will be remembered with great fondness by many people.

“May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

“Please join me in holding the family in your prayers.”

Ordained in 1952, the Rev Bond served as a curate in Friern Barnet and as a vicar in Harringay, Harrow Weald and Pebmarsh before being appointed Archdeacon of Colchester in 1972 and Area Bishop of Bradwell in 1976.

In his retirement he served as Honorary Assistant Bishop in Gloucester and Worcester Dioceses until 2006 and as Honorary Assistant Bishop in Chelmsford Diocese from 2007.
