I would like to rectify some inaccuracies in your banner headline story of last week, on the town's Christmas lights.

The council was let down by its contractor in 2006 and it has been reviewing the problems that arose for some months.

Retiring council felt it was right to delay a final decision on the 2007 contract until after the May elections, to give the new council the opportunity for input.

The memories that townspeople have of many garlands across the whole length of the High Street can no longer be recreated, as legislation has changed to improve road safety.

Last year, for the first time, illuminations were put onto lamp posts on the middle and lower High Street, but this was not as effective as had been hoped.

The town council will continue to review the effectiveness of lighting schemes.

The town was not "forced" to use contractors.

As a responsible organisation, the council chooses to use contractors for specialist work such as the installing of seasonal illuminations in order to ensure all necessary regulations are followed to safeguard the public.

In all its decisions, the council is mindful of achieving value for money without compromising public safety.
