A FORMER Thames Barge skipper will be speaking about his life on the water at a special event.

The Blackwater Sailing Barge Match Association has organised an evening of a screening of film clips of barges and a talk by Captain Jimmy Lawrence.

Captain Lawrence earned a living in sailing barges carrying up to 150 tons of cargo, working with their huge tanned sails alone, aided often by only one or two other crew, and with no engine.

He will entertain the audience with stories and anecdotes of his life and provide a running commentary on excerpts of films of barge races from fifty years ago.

The event at Maldon Town Hall will take place on February 25 from 7.30pm.

The first half of the evening will see a series of films from the archive featuring the barges and crews who sailed in the 1960s and 1970s.

After the interval a short film of the 2016 Race and a professionally made film shot on the River Thames in London.

Entry is £3. To find out more visit bsbma.com/index.html.
