A much-needed bus stop is to be installed in Burnham despite the original cost for it more than doubling.

The new bus stop will be outside Curtis O’ Boyle in the High Street in place of an existing disabled parking bay, which will be relocated the other side of the shrubbery bed.

At a Burnham Town Council meeting last Tuesday, mayor Ron Pratt said Essex County Council Highways Panel had originally expected the bus stop to cost about £10,000, however, when it was surveyed, the actual cost jumped to £25,000.

Mr Pratt said: “The good news is the Highways Panel agreed to fund it so it is still going ahead."

Councillor Una Norman told the Standard: “It’s been in the pipeline for the last three years.

“At the moment people have to go half way up the road on the bus before they get off.

“This bus stop will be a godsend for the elderly and disabled.”
