Thousands of pounds will be spent restoring one of Maldon’s iconic images.
The Thames Sailing Barge Trust, based in the Hythe Quay, has received a confirmed grant of £100,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the conservation of their spritsail barge Centaur.
The project, which starts this month and will be completed by early 2014, will restore the wooden planking on the bottom of the barge to its original thickness after nearly 118 years of sailing in the Thames Estuary and east coast rivers.
