David Cameron is to announce a new crime initiative to help offenders turn their lives around
The Government and prison system must "do more for less" to break the cycle of criminals reoffending, David Cameron has said.
Ahead of a major speech in which the Prime Minister will announce a "rehabilitation revolution" under which virtually all prisoners will receive help turning their lives around, he insisted a shortage of money was not an issue.
Instead, a major extension of payment-by-results for companies, charities and voluntary groups who help offenders escape a life of crime will refocus resources into bringing down reoffending rates, he said.
Speaking on a visit to Wormwood Scrubs prison in west London, Mr Cameron said: "We have got to do more for less. Every place here costs £40,000, there are 600 staff that work in this prison - it's not a shortage of money, it's that we haven't been focusing people on what really matters, which is the results."
