Ranger charged over criminal damage
Ex-Premiership footballer Nile Ranger has been charged with criminal damage, police said.
Wiltshire Police said the 23-year-old Swindon Town FC striker would appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
A force spokesman said: "Wiltshire Police can confirm that Nile Ranger, 23, of Gordon Gardens, Swindon, has been charged with one count of criminal damage.
"He has been remanded in custody. He will appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning."
Yesterday a national newspaper reported it had been handed CCTV footage allegedly showing Ranger assaulting a woman and damaging a block of flats in the town.
The Sunday Mirror reported it had been handed CCTV footage taken by a camera at the entrance to the flats in Gordon Gardens on April 13.
It allegedly shows Ranger - who previously played for Newcastle United - unable to access the communal front door of the apartment block, and trying repeatedly to barge and kick the door in.
Police said tonight the unnamed woman had spoken to officers and no further action would be taken.
Yesterday, Wiltshire Police said damage "in the region of £2,000" was caused to a lift door, wall and glass panel at the property.
Earlier today, Swindon Town FC announced that Ranger had been invited to a disciplinary hearing at The County Ground on Thursday following a meeting between chairman Lee Power and team manager Mark Cooper.
A spokesman for the League One club said: "Swindon Town can confirm that meetings have taken place between senior members of the club and, having consulted with the various football bodies, the club have invited Nile Ranger to attend a disciplinary hearing on May 1 to take place at The County Ground.
"The club have contacted Nile informing him of this meeting. Meanwhile, an investigation is being carried out.
"The club have provided Nile with reasonable notice of this disciplinary meeting to allow him the opportunity to state his case.
"The club will make a further statement following Thursday's hearing."
