Maldon and Tiptree boss Spillane has surprises in store

MALDON & Tiptree boss Terry Spillane admits there could be “one or two surprises” among his summer signings.

But he is keeping tight-lipped about possible new recruits – having had his fingers burnt in the past.

Maldon start pre-season training on Monday night, as they continue their preparations for the new Ryman League division one north season, which kicks-off on August 18.

However, until his signings have put pen to paper on registration forms, he is reluctant to name names.

“I always call this the silly season, because other managers are naming players left, right and centre,” said Spillane.

“And while I’m not saying they’re wrong, it’s not my way of doing things.

“Until players sign, everything is based on verbal agreements and if you go public it can come back and haunt you.

“I know from experience that it’s better to keep quiet.

“Players mean well and may have every intention of signing, only to change their mind or get a better offer.

“Managers and clubs can get caught out and be left with egg on their face.”

Spillane admits he has irons in the fire, in terms of boosting his Park Drive squad.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of players, including last season’s squad, and there could be one or two surprises in terms of new signings,” he said.

Spillane confirmed that some of the existing squad are moving on, including striker Sos Yao, who is joining Ryman League premier division side Met Police.

“When a new manager comes in, players invariably move on,” he said.

“I understand that. It’s part and parcel of football.

“It’s disappointing but we’ll get new players in to replace them.”
