Depleted Burnham Sports fall to defeat

AN entertaining sixth-wicket stand of 127 by Joel Whittaker and Jack Silvester could not prevent depleted Burnham Sports suffering a heavy defeat away to South Weald.

The pair came together with their team on a sorry 37 for five in the T-Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture, chasing 281 for victory.

It would have been easy for the pair to throw in the towel, especially with fast bowler Pummell, who had taken all the wickets, continuing to bowl with menace and pace.

However, they gave the home team some of their own medicine, Whittaker making 70 and Silvester 45 before falling to successive deliveries.

Whittaker hit a six and ten fours, his younger colleague finding the boundary six times.

Earlier, Sports had worked hard to limit South Weald to 98 for two after 22 overs.

However, the visiting team then wilted, with the home side thumping 182 in the second half of their innings.

Chambers, their captain, the opening bat, held his team’s innings together with an undefeated 112, albeit he was given a couple of lives along the way.

This Saturday, Sports, who have faded after a bright start to the campaign, travel to Bentley seconds, who have already been relegated.
