Belief is strong at Maldon
4:47pm Thursday 9th August 2012 in Ryman Division One North
MALDON believe victory and their style of performance over Lakenheath has secured their place in the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one.
Stand-in skipper Marc Gozzett said: “After this win, and given the way we are playing, we are surely safe in this league this season.
“After surviving by the skin of our teeth last year we are guaranteed a safe mid-table performance.
“In fact, with our bowling attack, we can take on and beat anyone but the top two.”
It was the bowlers who saw Maldon home after they had battled to post 166.
Jamie Glenn (35) and Neil Simpson (35) recovered the innings after two early losses, but at 68 for four, with Glenn caught to a smart slip catch, Maldon were still in trouble.
Gozzett said: “However, we are a fighting, obdurate bunch and all the lower order men battled to take us to a defendable total.”
The wicket in this wet summer gave the bowlers some assistance and with Gozzett switching his attack well, Lakenheath struggled.
They had one decent stand after Gary Bannister (one for 22) and Jack Riley (three for 19) removed both openers for 17. Lakenheath got to 72 for two but Maldon’s attack has wicket takers in it and young Chris Harris (three for 38) broke the stand and took out two more of the middle order.
Ian Elliott got Pallant (35) and that was that.
Lakenheath had no answer to Jamie Glenn (two for 17) and Jack Riley.
Any attempt to attack the bowlers’ accuracy resulted in a wicket and Lakenheath were bowled out for 150.
