MALDON Higashi Karate Club took a squad to the Higashi National Competition held at the Rivermead sports complex in Reading last weekend.
The club's squad consisted of mainly juniors and they were first on competing in their respective kata sections, although just out of the medals on this occasion they were soon back in the thick of the action with Shelliegh Clydesale taking a hard fought silver in the girls kumite (fighting) and this was followed by Mike Foster taking bronze in the boys purple and brown belt brown kumite.
He then joined his brothers Mark and Ben to compete in the three man team junior team kata section, this event requires the team to not only complete the set moves of the kata in the correct sequence and with power and purpose but they must also keep in exact timing together and are judged on all of those points.

This was a first time for the club and possibly for the event to have an all family affair taking part as one team.
Not to be outdone in the senior team kata club instructors Steve Gibbs and Paul Smith and his son Connor Clydesdale teamed up to compete under the ruling that one team member is allowed to take part even though they are under 16 years old.
So with an age gap that defies calculation and obvious height difference and despite it being their first attempt competing together, Maldon's team put on a winning performance and took the gold and the National Team Kata Title.
