Cheek stays loyal to Heybridge Swifts

Heybridge Swifts striker Michael Cheek has rejected a seven-day approach from Bishop’s Stortford.

And the prolific front man is also likely to knock back an offer from Leiston.

Cheek, a summer signing from Stanway Rovers, has caught the attention of other teams after scoring in Swifts’ last five games, culminating in Saturday’s 4-1 FA Trophy success against Worthing.

“Michael spoke to Bishop’s Stortford last weekend and told them he was happy at Heybridge,” said boss Mark Hawkes.

“I know he’s going to say the same to Leiston.

“It’s flattering that clubs are interested in my players because it shows we’re doing the right things.

“But it doesn’t really help and it’s not something I welcome at this stage of the season.

“He and everyone else at the club are committed to Heybridge Swifts.

“Michael has so much potential and I’m sure that eventually he’ll play at a higher level – but hopefully with us.”

Swifts go to Hayes and Yeading this weekend, in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The match has been switched to Sunday, rather than Saturday, as the team Hayes share a ground with – Woking – are at home to Gateshead.
