MALDON and Tiptree’s Ollie Berquez believes he and his team-mates have to keep their feet on the ground – despite their bright start to the season.

The Park Drive side are third in Ryman League division one north, yet to lose a game and through to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The club’s raft of new players have settled in quickly and midfielder Berquez is full of praise for boss Terry Spillane and assistant Jody Brown.

However, he has issued a note of caution and believes the team should be judged in a dozen games’ time, rather than now. “Things are definitely going well,” said the former Chelmsford City man, who is the longest-serving player on the Park Drive books.

“We’re still unbeaten, have some really good players and everyone is working hard.

“It’s been a steady start but it’s also early days and I’m experienced enough to know not to get carried away.

“Let’s see where we are in another 12 to 15 games.”

Berquez has played in every game so far and helped Maldon to an impressive 2-0 victory at Soham Town Rangers on Saturday, in the FA Cup.

The draw for the second qualifying round took place on Monday and Spillane’s men now face a trip to division one north rivals Brentwood. Berquez suffered a bruised ankle last weekend but only came off as a precaution and will be fit for Saturday’s FA Trophy preliminary round trip to Walton and Hersham.
