PROMOTION from the Essex Senior League lies in the hands of Burnham Ramblers.
Despite losing two games to the weather in the last week, the Leslie Field side’s position at the summit of the league was strengthened by other results going their way.
Manager Garry Kimble feels his players and staff at the club are starting to believe they can do it this season.
Stansted are the visitors to Leslie Field on Saturday as Burnham hope to get a game after back-to-back postponements.
Their trip to Bowers and Pitsea for the first-leg of their League Cup quarter-final fell foul of a waterlogged surface on Saturday, but other results left Ramblers five points clear at the top of the league with two games in hand over the chasing pack.
Kimble said: “Even though we didn’t have a game, all the results seemed to go our way and we are now clear at the top with games in hand.
“As I said to the players and I have heard supporters saying it, it is ours to lose now.
“I don’t think it makes much difference being top rather than chasing the leaders, but all the players know they are striving for promotion this year.
“Everyone is pulling in the right direction and I think there are some at the club who are quite surprised with the start we have had, but we are taking it one game at a time and what will be will be.
“We have enough characters in the squad and hand on heart, I honestly believe we can win this league this year.
“If we can stay there until Christmas, we will be very hard to beat afterwards.
“People can say that we will lose it and fade away, but we won’t do that as we have enough strength in depth and everyone in our squad will play a very important part between now and the end of the season.”
Apart from having a day off on Saturday, Ramblers were also left without a game when Tuesday night’s scheduled league game at Barking was also postponed by a waterlogged pitch, however, that wasn’t necessarily bad news for Kimble’s team.
He added: “It was a bit of a blessing in disguise as we had four or five out with flu.
“We had a training session when we took the lads for a run on Saturday and gave them the night off so it has been a little mid-season break and a chance to recharge the batteries.
“It is a real six-pointer against Stansted so we have to make sure we are not complacent.”
Kimble said he expected the players struggling with illness to be fit for Saturday’s game, but midfielder Ross Adams is suspended.
Burnham’s postponed League Cup quarter-final first-leg against Bowers and Pitsea has been rearranged for December 12, with the home leg taking place seven days later at Leslie Field.
The league meeting between the two, which had been due to be played on December 12, has now been moved to January.
