CLAIRE Vigrass has regained her US Ladies’ Open singles crown.
The leading British real tennis junior, 18-year-old Vigrass, took the title on Sunday at the National Tennis Club, Newport, Rhode Island.
Vigrass, from Inworth, defeated her doubles partner, US number one 35-year-old Frederika Adam, 6-0, 6-1 in the final. Vigrass and Adam then joined forces against US pair Jane Lippincott and Amanda Avedissian in the Ladies’ Open doubles final.
The outcome was never in doubt, with Vigrass and Adam, top seeds following their French Ladies’ Open doubles championship win in October, closing Lippincott and Avedissian out of the match 6-1, 6-0.
Vigrass, who plays for Prested Hall, became the youngest-ever real tennis Open winner when she first won this singles in 2007, but did not defend her title last year, having withdrawn from competition to study for the four A-levels she gained at Colchester County High School for Girls, where she was also Head of Games.
Vigrass is now ranked women’s world number three, and Prested Hall’s Head Professional, Matt Potter, believes she has every chance of improving on this at the Australian Open in Hobart in January.
