INCOMING captain Gordon Howat entertained former men’s captains during a breakfast at Burnham Golf Club.

He then joined the field of 72 players who were playing an 18-hole team competition with yellow balls (double points).

Meanwhile, 21 past captains played a nine-hole stableford.

After lunch and a prizegiving, it was time for outgoing captain David Elphinstone to put out (a three put) and Howat to ‘drive in’.

For the second year running, Ron Redman won the past captain’s nine-hole competition (24 points), from outgoing captain Elphinstone (23).

Team prizes went to Brian Roach, Micky Parish, James Marchant, Fenton Yewlett (164 points), who finished ahead of runners-up Mick Leonard, Chris Roberts, Dan Munro and Ronnie Walkinshaw (162).

On Sunday, in cold and very windy conditions, the Mixed Captains' Challenge took place at Burnham.

The new men's, ladies' and and vice-captains led out the field and played a waltz.

Nearest the pins: Ladies' fifth - Liz Clark; 11th - Denise Howat. Men's eighth - new captain Gordon Howat. Overall: 1st Laura Whiteman, Liz Clark, David Frost and Anne Mapes 79 points; 2nd David Elphinstone, Tony Wilkin, Lisa Turner and Liz Tolhurst 78 points; 3rd Don Edwards, Gary Gregory, Sue Frost and Hilary Skeens 77 points.

With good conditions still prevailing, a decent turnout of 31 ladies played the November Stableford.

Helen Ford was first, with 38 points.

Jean Bailey was second, with 36, and Liz Clark third, with 35.

There were three players on 34 points and they were the newly-returned to golf Jane Baker (fourth), Shelagh Edwards (fifth) and Elaine Elphinstone (sixth).
