MALDON Golf Club's busy weekend began with their trophy presentation night and firework display.

Over 70 members and guests gathered at the clubhouse to celebrate the competition victories of many members during the preceding year.

Immediate past captains Terry Butcher, Mary King and seniors' captain Eric Bane presented the respective trophies to the three sections of the club.

Club chairman Tony Davis and his daughter provided a fine barbecue and past captain Nigel Cook, along with Neil Culleton and helpers, gave the members and guests a memorable firework display.

During the evening, past captains Butcher and King made their charity cheque presentations for £2,650 and £1,000 to representatives of Essex Air Ambulance and Crohns and Colitis UK.

Maldon Golf Club ambassador and world-ranked number 12 snooker professional Ali Carter was on hand to help with the lady captain's charity presentation.

The third week of Maldon Golf Club's men's Winter League saw 35 pairs contesting the better ball stableford competition.

The winning pair were Jim Scott and Ed Bishop, who scored a fantastic 46 points.

Darren Mason and Dan Hazell were second in the weekly sweepstake on 44 points, with Mark Beckwith and Keith Hinton third on 43.

Mick Kempen and Steve Gearey just beat Rob and Dave Poynton to fourth place on countback, with both pairs scoring 42 points.

Captain Paul Holland's weekly prize for nearest the pin on the par three fifth/14th hole went to Sam Cummins

With three weeks completed, the Winter League table sees Josh Cousins and Ben Griffiths in the lead with 59 points. Steve Gearey and Mick Kempen are second on 48, with Tony Davis and Martin Read, along with Sam Cummins and Alan Buckingham, in joint third on 46.

In a correction to last week's report, the men's November monthly stableford competition was won by Jordan Hazell with 35 points.
