BURNHAM Rugby Club's under-11s had their first outing as a fully-fledged team.

Kaine Sturman, Conner Moss, Lewis Reed, Thomas Garlick, Elliot George, Carter Sheers and Reggie Down formed their side to take on Old Brentwood in three short matches.

Nerves were showing a little in Burnham's first match and they were beaten 30-15.

Old Brentwood had Burnham on the back-foot for most of the first half, which eventually awarded them with a try. Burnham managed to get some good tackles in and all the new starters got stuck into the flow of play.

After a quick regroup Burnham came back fighting with a great flurry of passing, allowing Carter Sheers to make a half way line sprint to secure an equalising try.

Both teams were well matched and not much ground was taken but Old Brentwood made a last-ditch effort to break and was rewarded with a great running try.

Burnham started the second match slowly, due to Old Brentwood’s greater experience.

They had the upper hand when the ball went to ground and frequently turned over the ball in ruck situations.

However, with some really strong defending and tackling Burnham kept Old Brentwood back and only conceded one try. Burnham grew in confidence in the second half and some great position work from Lewis Reed allowed him to push through for a try.

The two teams were evenly matched after that and Connor Moss's amazing break almost saw another Burnham try but they were denied by an unlucky push into touch.

The final seconds of the game saw Burnham just losing their form allowing Old Brentwood to sneak through the lines with some great team work for a try and a 10-5 win.

Burnham really pulled together as a team in the third match, with all of their players keeping their positions, tackling hard and passing out to the wings.

Some great tackling and passing from newcomers Elliot George and Thomas Garlick kept the pressure on, putting Old Brentwood on the defensive.

Connor Moss again stepped up after receiving a quick pass won from a dropped ball and steamed down the touch line for a fantastic sprinting try.

Old Brentwood came out strongly in the second half and pushed Burnham back to score an early try.

Burnham kept their heads up and dug deep but the more experienced Old Brentwood side's great ruck and maul technique secured them another try in the final seconds, to secure a 10-5 win.

BURNAM Rugby Club's under-12s took on Romford in their first match of the season and lost 55-10.

Burnham agreed to three Old Brentwood players joining their squad for some game time.

It was a fierce contest of rucks and mauls and defending by Burnham, in the opening stages.

But Romford managed to cross the gain line with their dazzling centre who ran and side-stepped with amazing runs through Burnham's defence.

In the scrums Romford started on top and winning ball against the head, which led to another try.

At half-time Burnham were 5-0 down and came out to raise their game.

It resulted with ball moving through some hands, with their captain capitalising on some poor defence to crash the ball over the line to score.

Burnham rallied and continued to contest in all areas with the scum started to get on top, winning some ball.

The move of the match was provided by Burnham who charged up the field with counter ruck.

After the ball moved forward and freely moved through the hands of several players, it resulted into a maul and the Burnham player surged forward to crash over the line.

However, Romford ran over a few move tries near the end.

Burnham's player of the match was A Gregory.

BURNHAM Rugby Club's under-13 and under-14s were in action against Chingford.

They produced an excellent effort over three matches, despite the disadvantage of low numbers which led to them being loaned players from Chingford.

They won their first match 10-7 and despite losing 29-0 in the second match, were victorious in their third match after winning 12-5.
