JOEY Takayama was triumphant in the James Elphinstone Trophy as Burnham on Crouch Golf Club's juniors held their Cadet Day.

The morning saw a putting and chipping contest and a was a close game was eventually won by Richard Smith.

After lunch the James Elphinstone Trophy was played for with all cadets playing well and the final result seeing first place go to Takayama with 41 points, with Richard Smith second on 39 points and Charlie Turner third on 38.

There were blustery conditions for the McKinlay Trophy, but 16 players had par or better from a field of 64.

First went to Micky Parish on 41 points, second to David Elphinstone on 39 and third to Andy Rapley on 38 on countback from Tom Tothill, Jamie Pounds, Derek Hawks and Martin Johnson.

The home leg of the match against Boyce Hill was played.

The visitors brought a 6-2 lead from the first leg, but Burnham fought valiantly with the captain and vice-captain gaining a half point and new boys Mark Langley and Gary Walton scrambling hard to do the same.

With nine matches on the day, Burnham needed big performances from the rest of the squad and Warren Needham and Dominic Adams won 3&2 while Paul Greenaway and Richard Krzanowski triumphed 5&4.

A final point for Mick Leonard and Chris Roberts (one-up) meant a home victory of 5-4 for Burnham but Boyce Hill won 10-7 on aggregate.

The ladies' September Medal was won in the silver division by Denise Howat with a nett 69 and in the bronze by Shelagh Edwards, with a special highlight coming with a hole-in-one for Linda Stevens on the fifth.

Burnham seniors retained the Anchor Trophy with a 5½-2½ win against Maldon.

It is an annual contest between the senior sections of the two clubs over home and away legs and having won the away match 7-1, Burnham lifted the Trophy with a 12½-3½ aggregate win.
