CONSISTENCY proved key for winner Nick Rushen in Maldon Golf Club's Basil Bright Trophy.

Rushen produced an aggregate nett medal score of 136 to win the club's men's handicap medal championship.

The 36-hole medal competition, first contested in 1972, is played over consecutive weekends and some excellent scores were returned each week.

Rushen's back-to-back rounds of nett 68 were enough to beat off stiff competition from runner-up Chas Harris, who carded a total nett 138 (66 and 72).

Dave Poynton was third on nett 141 (68 and 73), Alan Syrett was fourth on countback with nett 142 (73 and 69) and Pete Hawkins finished fifth after also scoring 142 (68 and 74).

The first week's nearest-the-pin prizes went to Alan Syrett and Mick Orrin, while week two winners were Paul Shires and Mick Kempen.

Maldon's ladies competed for the President's Salver, with Margaret Caviel claiming victory.

Sue Gardiner was runner-up, ahead of third-placed Lynda Skerry.

Maldon's Seniors' match at their old adversaries Burnham on Crouch GC was a hard-fought contest.

But the hosts ran out winners by 5.5-2.5 on matches.
