TWENTY-NINE Five Lakes seniors contested the historic Tolly Cobbold Cup.

This is a strokeplay qualifying competition held on the Lakes course.

In warm sunshine and bone-dry conditions, but with a welcome fresh breeze blowing, scoring was not easy with only 11 of the field returning scores better than nett 80.

The challenging rough clearly contributed to some high scores but the near-perfect putting surfaces gave opportunities to bring scores back on track.

Jim Fern, playing off 11, returned a lowest gross of 84 and his nett 73 was enough to take top spot, closely challenged by past captain Richard Taylor with a nett 74.

It was pleasing to see 18-handicapper Tony Horne regaining some of his past good form, taking third place with a nett 76.

Main results: Tolly Cobbold Cup: 1st Jim Fern gross 84 nett 73, 2nd Richard Taylor gross 91 nett 74, 3rd Tony Horne gross 94 nett 79, 4th David Swain gross 96 nett 77 on countback, 5th Peter Coulstock gross 92 nett 77, 6th Peter Gee gross 92 nett 78 on countback.

The nearest the pin competition was won by David Owen on the fourth hole and David Barbour on the 11th.

Tony Tyler scored a birdie two on the eighth hole.
