NEW Maldon and Tiptree boss Kevin Horlock insists he will not sign players for the sake of it ahead of the new Ryman League division north season.

The Jammers boss is yet to add to his squad since taking over last month but says he is not concerned about bringing in new additions, having retained the vast majority of last season’s squad.

Maldon finished the 2015-16 campaign strongly under former boss Steve Ball and although he is talking to potential signings, Horlock says he is in no hurry to bolster his options.

Horlock said: “My phone hasn’t stopped with calls from players who have been released from clubs and wanting to come to Maldon and Tiptree but we won’t sign them purely on the back of them being at pro clubs.

“We might set up a trial game so we can take a look at them.

“But we’re playing it pretty cool and as I’ve said before, we won’t just go out and sign players for the sake of it because this squad is more than capable of competing at the top of the division.

“Apart from Ben Wyatt who has signed a deal with Colchester, the whole squad from last season has re-engaged and no-one has left.

“It’s quite rare to be able to keep a squad together but the unity and team spirit is high and I think that the players can see that we’re moving in the right direction and want to achieve something with us.

“I enquired about a couple of players who have played at a higher level but that didn’t materialise.

“Nothing has changed and there’s no panic on our part and I think we’re pretty strong across the board.

“In order to get out of this division, you have to be solid as a unit and score goals.

“Sam Newson has scored continuously at this level and if we can add someone up top to help him out we will but we do have players who will chip in with goals around him.”

Maldon return for pre-season training on June 30, ahead of their pre-season friendly against Colchester United on July 9.

“I’m really looking forward to working with this group of players,” added Horlock.

“I’ve not had the opportunity to work with them yet but everyone wants the same thing and has the same objective.

“The team was doing really well when I took over which was a massive bonus and we want to carry on the excellent work done by Steve Ball.”
