FATHER-AND-SON Pete and Elliot Hawkins made it a family weekend to remember at Maldon Golf Club.

Both secured victory in annual competitions.

The main club competition was the Captains' Cup, a full handicap stableford first contested in 1996.

Two of Maldon's younger golfers led the way, returning outstanding scores of 40 points, and therefore a countback was needed to determine the winner.

Nineteen-year-old Elliot Hawkins (17 handicap) had a back-nine score of 23 points to edge out in-form 21-year-old Billy Mason (3), the latter having shot a round of one-under-par 70 gross with a back-nine score of 21 points.

In the six qualifying events played to date for this year's Order of Merit title, Mason has yet to finish outside the top three and already holds a lead of over 100 points, having played some truly amazing golf which has seen his exact handicap cut to 2.9.

Third place in the Captains' Cup went to Dave Purkiss, with 38 points, on countback from Roy Hurren, while Rob Poynton was fifth with 37 points.

The nearest the pin prizes for the day were won by Paul Jackson and Dave Poynton.

Meanwhile, the past captains of the club competed for the John Rigby Bowl in the annual full handicap stableford competition.

Current captain Terry Butcher also played as an invited guest.

A very close-fought contest was decided on countback after three players returned scores of 33 points.

2013/14 captain Pete Hawkins secured first place to retain the trophy he won last year.

Rob Holland was second and Nigel Cook third.

The competition was followed by the past captains' dinner, hosted by immediate past captain Jim Culleton.

The June monthly medal was coupled with the Limit Cup, a full handicap medal for players of 20 handicap and above.

Twenty-six handicapper Tony Reece-Ford secured victory in both competitions with a nett 68.

By virtue of his winning score, Reece-Ford's handicap was cut by two shots.

Second place went to Dan Gardner on nett 70, while Keith Bannister was third with nett 72 and Pete Hawkins fourth on nett 73.

Maldon's seniors competed for the Coates Bowl, a stableford competition, which was won by Dave Allen on 33 points. John Sharp was second with 30 points and Eric Bane third with 28.

In the county competition for the Jubilee Cup, Maldon hosted the Rayleigh Club in another of their round-robin league matches.

Despite a couple of outstanding performances by the home side, the visitors played well enough to secure a victory by four points.
