A FINE performance in the singles was not enough to prevent Maldon Golf Club from suffering defeat in the Leslie F Wood Team Championship second round.
Following their impressive first-round victory over Mardyke Valley, Maldon travelled to Clacton on Sea in confident mood.
Greeted by unusually calm conditions, the team were hopeful of another successful day but the morning foursomes were dominated by the home side who led 5-0 at lunch.
The afternoon singles brought out some superb performances by the Maldon squad.
There were convincing wins for Alan Buckingham, Sam Cummins, Tony Davis, Ian Keen and Chris Purkiss, while Richard Nash and Martyn Cook secured well-earned halves.
As a result, Maldon won the singles 6-4 but it was not enough to prevent Clacton winning 9-6, overall.
Maldon's Seniors played two more of their regular friendly matches.
They travelled to Frinton Golf Club where their hosts proved too strong for them, winning 5.5-2.5 on matches.
But Maldon enjoyed a much better result in the home match against Channels Golf Club, securing a convincing 6.5-1.5 win.
Maldon ladies' usual Tuesday morning meet was a rather special occasion.
Past lady captains Jean Roberts, Kate Stevenson and Eileen Yems invited their fellow members to join them in celebrating their 80th birthdays.
