MALDON Golf Club's men's section contested the Richardson Cups.

Twenty-seven pairs took part in the foursomes stableford competition, with each pair receiving a 50 per cent combined handicap allowance.

The trophies were presented to the club in 1937 by Stewart Richardson, always to be played for in a foursomes format.

Despite the marvellously sunny, warm conditions, the golf was of a rather mixed quality.

However, the pairing of Peter Bibby and Chris Purkiss combined well to win with 37 points.

Just losing out in second place, on countback, were Rob Holland and Sam Cummins.

Third place went to Ken Smalley and Dave Porter, who scored 36, while Paul Shires and Dave Poynton secured fourth slot on 34.

After a four-way countback on 33 points, Nigel Cook and George Watson were awarded fifth place.

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Richard Nash, on the fifth/14th, and Ed Bishop, on the sixth/15th.

The May monthly stableford doubled-up as the men's qualifier for the annual Tony Stevenson Trophy.

The final will be contested at the end of the summer by the winners of the men's, seniors', ladies' and juniors' qualifiers.

The winner, with 36 points, was Ray Hollington.

In second on 34 points was Mick Meager, with Ged Claydon third, on countback, with 33.

Maldon's seniors played another of their regular friendly matches, this time at home to Forrester Park.

A closely-fought contest went the way of the visitors, by five matches to three.
