BURNHAM on Crouch Golf Club’s ladies held their first medal competition of the year and Denise Howat continued the great form she has showed over the winter to take the victory.

There was a good turnout of 33 players in the 18-hole medal and four played in the nine-hole competition.

Having showed great form all through the winter, Howat had a five-under par round of 67 and cut her handicap by two shots to 12.1. Second in Silver division was Jillean Hipsey with nett 72 and third went to Liz Tolhurst with a 73 nett.

In Bronze division, first went to Heather Hornbrook on nett 78 and second to Linda Sinden on nett 79.

On a lovely day for golf and with the course in excellent condition, the first mixed competition of the year was a Good Friday Waltz combined with Easter egg hunt for nine groups of four.

The winners, on countback with 78 points, were Mark Evans, Jan Fitch, Martin Brown and Pam Barrow.

Runners up were Mick Clark, Mick Hammond, Denise Howat and Claire Brown, also with 78, with third spot going to Avis Greenaway, Laura Whiteman, Tony Wilkin and Barry Fitch with 76 points.

Nearest the pin on the fifth were Howat and Hammond, while it was Liz Clark and Roger Miles on the 11th.

The following day was overcast and blustery for the men’s March Tankard, which was reflected in the course standard scratch being +3.

RESULTS: Division one: 1 Daniel Munro nett 72 (ocb), 2 Roger Miles nett 72 (ocb), 3 Malcolm Richardson nett 72. Division two: 1 Henry Mendel nett 69, 2 Stephen Bray nett 70, 3 Malcom Richardson nett 75.

Sunday was the Jack Cooke Trophy for players with handicaps 18 to 28.

The weather had deteriorated and competitors were few but for those that braved it, Bob Wallace was top with 34 points and second went to Colin Barnes with 29 points.

Easter Monday’s Peter Hale Trophy was blown out by the gale-force winds from Storm Katie.
