Brightlingsea Regent claimed a strong victory in the Robert Dyas League Cup.

Brightlingsea secured a 3-0 first round victory at Soham Town Rangers on Saturday.

Jake Turner fired in a great free-kick to go 1-0 up.

And the visitors doubled their lead six minutes later.

Jake Gould lifted the ball into the box and it bounced over the centre-back and keeper Harry Reynolds misjudged its flight allowing Josh Gould to fire home.

Phil Kelly almost put Brightlingsea further in front three minutes later but his effort hit the post.

Brightlingsea continued to pressure the Soham goal and Turner went close to grabbing his second but Reynolds managed to tip his long-range shot onto the bar on 40 minutes.

After the break, the visitors continued to hold the upper hand.

But Soham went close to pulling a goal back but the shot went just wide of the post on 54 minutes.

However, Regent’s pressure paid of in the 65th minute,.

Lamell Howell broke down the right and crossed into the area Jake Gordon dummied and Luke Read fired home to make it 3-0.

Brightlingsea continued to be in charge and saw out the win to progress to the next round.

In Ryman League division one north, Maldon and Tiptree fell to a 1-0 defeat at Cheshunt.

After a goal-less first half it was the home side that took the lead when Jason Hallett made it 1-0 on 59 minutes.

It got worse for Maldon when Darren Mills was sent off after he picked up a second yellow card for simulation on 87 minutes.

Ten-man Maldon couldn’t then make the breakthrough and had to return home in defeat.
