HEYBRIDGE Swifts boss Cliff Akurang wants his side to put on a show for their home fans.

Swifts picked up their first win of the Ryman League division north season at the weekend with a 4-2 victory at Soham Town Rangers.

This was the Scraley Road side’s first points of the season after a 2-1 loss at home against Thamesmead Town and a 1-0 away defeat to Aveley.

And it wasn’t just the three points that pleased Akurang but the manner of their victory.

He now wants them to replicate that performance against Dereham Town on Saturday.

He said: “The players have set themselves a benchmark now.

“Playing a style of football that I want them to bring to the pitch every week.

“Once you get into that flow you have got to keep that going.

“The only thing I was disappointed about was that it wasn’t in front of the home fans.

“We need them to show that against Dereham.

“The boys did an excellent job, a professional job on Saturday.

“Their attitude was spot on and we scored early which settled the nerves.

“And when we were 4-1 up it was a lot more comfortable for me on the side lines.

“When we had periods of pressure before and were on top we weren’t capitalising on it.

“But this time around we did take our chances and that gave us a boost.

“We have always had that belief and to take that chance when you are on top is a good thing.

“You have to take your chances when you are on top because in football you know the opposition are going to have chances and if they take them they get the boost and are on the up.

“We played some terrific football and all the goals were fantastic.”

Despite starting the campaign with back-to-back defeats Akurang had kept faith in his side and wasn’t ready to hit the panic button.

He added: “We started off the season with a lot of new faces and it has taken time to settle in.

“In all three games so far we have been in it.

“We have been competitive in every game.

“Which wasn’t the case in pre-season when we were playing teams like Colchester United and Braintree Town.

“That has allowed us to face teams in our league and find it not as difficult.”
