MALDON and Tiptree boss David Wright was pleased to progress in the Robert Dyas League Cup despite a late fight back from Witham Town.

The Jammers took a 3-2 first round win at Spa Road on Tuesday night, bouncing back from Saturday’s Ryman League division north 3-2 defeat against Great Wakering Rovers.

Maldon substitutes were the stars of the night with Darren McQueen grabbing a brace and Femi Akinwande opening the scoring.

However, divison rivals Witham made a fight of it scoring late on to put pressure on Maldon.

Wright said: “ We made it hard for ourselves in that we let them back into the game.

“But the more these young players play together the more they will learn how to finish games off and close games out.”

Wright had special praise for his goal-scorers who came off the bench.

He said: “ I was pleased with the substitutes.

“That’s what you want from them, to come on and make an impact.

“It’s nice to have those kinds of players on the bench.”

Wright then turned his attention to this weekend’s match at Haringey Borough.

He said: “We will wait for the scouting reports to come back.

“Look at their strengths and weaknesses and how to combat them.

“As a group we will sit down and look at how we will approach the game and how we can hurt them through their weaknesses.

“It’s all down to us and how we approach it.”
