TIPTREE Jobserve Bowls Club held its Freshman’s Cup.

Twenty-three players competed in the competition, which is open to members who had not previously won a singles title at the club.

The event is a good opportunity for new bowlers to test their skills against other relative novices.

The entry was divided into four groups of six, with Group A having to be made up of five players.

Each player played a game of five ends against each of the other players in his or her group.

Two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw.

In the event of a tie, shot difference decided the outcome.

The winners of each group were paired against each other in two six-end semi-finals.

The finalists emerged as newcomer David Sainty and Paul Collard.

In a closely-fought six-end final, Collard emerged as the eventual winner.

Thanks were given to club vice-captains Kevin Cornwell and Roy Davidson for their seamless running of the event, and to the army of volunteers who gave up their time to mark the games, in scorching temperatures.
