JIM Culleton hosted his Captain’s Invitational event at Maldon Golf Club.

Culleton invited numerous past captains from Essex clubs with whom he had played in his many years as a club golfer, both at Channels Golf Club and at Maldon.

The event was a roaring success with over 50 past captains from a variety of Essex clubs taking part, along with a few invited guests.

Teams of four competed in the full-handicap, stableford event where the best three scores on each hole counted towards the team’s total.

In first place was the fourball of Alan Duns, Kevin Church, Brian Sparkes (all Burnham) and George Gordon (Channels) on 117 points.

They secured victory on countback from Viv Locke (Maldon secretary/Burnham), Ann Hazel (Romford), Roy Sayer (Forrester Park) and Bill Shelley (Maldon) also on 117 points.

Nearest-the-pin prizes were awarded to past Maldon captain and current Chelmsford member Ian Dancey and Maldon member and past captain Keith Locke.

Initial calculations suggest that over £900 was raised for the Captain's charity, Breast Cancer Care.

On Sunday, 62 Maldon members competed in the men’s Jubilee Cup competition.

This impressive silver trophy dates back to 1935 and commemorates the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V.

There were some excellent scores in this full-handicap stableford event with Mike Kempen taking the spoils with 44 points.

Second place went to Steve Paddon with 41 points while Peter Scanes claimed third with 40.

Fourth place went to Aaron Dickson on 39 while Bill Shelley edged out Elliot Hawkins for fifth place on countback with 38.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Nigel Cook on the par three fifth/14th and Keith Bannister for the closest second shot on the par four sixth/15th.

Maldon Ladies competed for their Centenary Trophy, a full-handicap medal.

The winner on countback with nett 79 was Sally Francis, while second place went to Mary King.
