MALDON Golf Club’s members have enjoyed another very busy week of competition with the main event being the full members’ Centenary Trophy.

This magnificent silver bowl was presented to the club by past captain Peter Holmes to commemorate the club’s 100th birthday in 1991.

The cup originates from Holmes’ father’s home club where he was a multiple winner and ultimately retained the trophy.

The competition is played as a full-handicap medal and this year’s winner, with a fine score of nett 66, was Andrew Erskine.

As a result of his victory Erskine saw his handicap cut from 16 to 14 and he leapt to fifth place in this year’s Order of Merit table. Second place went to greens committee chairman Paul Holland on nett 69.

Darren Mason was third with a nett 70.

There was a countback to separate fourth and fifth places on nett 71, which went to Ricky Todd and Sam Cummins respectively.

The nearest-the-pin prizes went to Keith Hinton on the par three fifth/14th hole and Tony Last for the closest second shot to the pin on the par four sixth/15th hole.

On Wednesday, 43 members gathered to compete for the inaugural Barry Willsher Memorial Trophy.

Barry Willsher was a long-standing and incredibly popular Maldon member who tragically died in 2014.

His son-in-law and Maldon member Duncan Kilby donated a trophy to be contested annually in his memory.

This first holding of the competition was a roaring success and paid honour to Barry’s memory.

The winner of the stableford contest was Bill Shelley with a score of 41 points, nudging Pat Coyne (41) into second place on countback.

Third place went to four-handicapper Billy Mason who shot a fine round of level-par gross 71 to return 40 points.

The evening’s nearest the pin prizes went to Nick Grayson on the fifth/14th hole and to Keith Bannister on the sixth/15th.

Following the golf, everyone enjoyed a fine fish and chip supper and then welcomed Barry Willsher’s daughter Wendy who kindly came along to present the prizes to the winners.

Maldon’s ladies’ section played their Summer Trophy.

In this full-handicap stableford competition the winner was Jane Henderson with 35 points.

Second place went to Margaret Caviel on 29 points, while Jean Roberts was third with 27 points.

Maldon’s seniors’ section played their July medal.

The winner was Chris Pratt with a nett 69.

Second place went to Colin Pinn on 72, third was Mick Meager with 74, on countback from Tony Reece-Ford.

Tomorrow, sees club captain Jim Culleton host his Captain’s Invitational event at Maldon.

Sixty-four competitors, including 56 past and present Essex Golf Club Captains along with eight representative guests, compete in teams of four for this one-off event.

The competition tees-off at 1pm and the Maldon course will be closed for the duration of the event.

The event is being held in support of Jim Culleton’s Captain’s Charity for 2014/15 – Breast Cancer Care.
