WHILE many other league games were cancelled, Maldon made the trip up to mid-table Worlington.

The home side won the toss and put Maldon in to bat.

Things did not start well as Ross Walpole was trapped in front early on but the steady partnership of Robb Macmillan (23) and Jimmy Ainscough (42) settled the side.

Macmillan was caught behind at 60-2 but the introduction of the very experienced Ian Elliot (27) made up for his loss.

Ainscough’s was the next wicket to fall but, yet again, Maldon were able to form a key partnership that helped them pass the 100-run mark.

Both Elliot and Freddie Clarke were dismissed in quick succession by Craig Woollard (4-40) but skipper Martyn Coker came to the crease and scored a valiant 31 before he succumbed to Steven Flack (3-40).

Woollard and Flack successfully removed the Maldon middle-order but the visitors had a long line of batting to follow.

The tail struggled to contribute, however, and wickets fell cheaply. Despite several players making promising starts, nobody could go on to make a big score and this left Maldon slightly exposed going into the second innings. Despite Jack Riley (1-15) getting Matthew Peachey to knick-off early in the Worlington innings, Maldon’s bowlers could not penetrate the home side’s line-up Richard Ford (74 not out) and Jimmy Watson (92 not out) piled on the runs at a rate of knots but Maldon could not make a dent, despite using nine bowlers.

After this loss, Maldon remain in the relegation zone but are set to play bottom of the table Elmstead next week.
