THE headline event at Maldon Golf Club last weekend was Jim Culleton’s Captain’s Day.

The competition, on Sunday, was a full-handicap singles stableford contest, with both morning and afternoon shotgun starts.

Over 70 members and guests competed for an array of excellent prizes, with the morning entrants having to suffer the often torrential downpours.

The weather brightened up in the afternoon, so the later starters enjoyed by far the best of the day’s conditions.

Two players carded equal best qualifying scores and so a countback was required to determine the prizes. First place went to Darren Mason on 40 points and second place went to Aaron Dickson (40).

Elliot Hawkins picked up third place with 36, on countback from Bill Guthrie.

In the ladies’ competition first place went to club secretary Viv Locke, while Sue Gardiner came second.

The nearest-the-pin prize on the par three fifth/14th went to Aaron Dickson while Alan Buckingham won the prize for the closest second shot to the par four sixth/15th hole.

In other club events, Maldon seniors entertained Frinton seniors in their return fixture, on one of the hottest days of the year.

With the course looking immaculate, a keenly-fought match ensued with Maldon running out victors by 6-2.
