HEYBRIDGE Swifts boss Cliff Akurang was delighted with his side’s final league performance of the season.

The Scraley Road side secured a 2-0 Ryman League division one north win against visiting Brentwood Town.

The win against Brentwood, who finished in the play-offs, saw Swifts ended the season in 12th place.

Akurang said: “It was a great game to end the league season.

“I think it was one of our best performances of the season.

“We controlled the game from start to finish against a team that is in the play-offs.”

Shamido Pedulu had an early chance and he hit the bar from 20 yards on 11 minutes.

Brentwood then almost took the lead when Tom Richardson’s header had keeper Danny Sambridge beaten but his effort was cleared off the line by Damien Green on 36 minutes.

After the break, Swifts almost took the lead but Jack West’s penalty was saved by Brentwood keeper Sam Cole.

Billy Hunt then gave Swifts the lead on 72 minutes.

Three minutes later Hunt doubled their advantage.

Akurang praised the commitment of his side in finishing the season in a strong position.

He said: “It is testament to the hard work of the players and that is why we have finished where we have.

“The boys have taken on board what we have said to them and hard work on the training ground has got them their rewards.”

Akurang has high aims for next season and is hoping his side won’t break up.

He said: “The target for me, as I am sure it is for everyone else, is to win the league next season.

“And until it is mathematically impossible then that is what we will be aiming for.

“If we start well, have a good middle and finish strongly like we did this season then we are in with a chance.

“I haven’t got any targets playerwise at the moment.

“My main aim is to hold on to the players that I have – they are targets for others at the moment.

“If I can do that then I will look to add one or two quality players to the team.”
