MALDON Golf Club's men’s section contested the Golden Putter competition over three days.

This is a charity competition with all entry fees going to a deserving cause each year.

The weather from Friday to Sunday was extremely changeable, with the worst of it saved for the 36 players who turned out on Sunday morning.

Despite the adverse conditions the winner came from Sunday’s competitors, with Peter Scanes returning a fine 43 stableford points to claim victory by three strokes.

Scanes also secured the nearest-the-pin prize on the par three fifth/14th hole to round off a very successful day.

Second place overall went to Mike Worden on 40 points, Des Bastian was third with 39 on countback from Alan Syrett, while Peter Harper and Bill Griffiths both returned Sunday scores of 38 points to claim the fourth and fifth slots.

So, despite the adverse weather, five of the top six scores came from Sunday's entrants.

The Saturday swindle this week was a team-of-four stableford event, with the best three scores counting on each hole.

Winning by five clear points on 119 was the team of Alan Paddon, Andy West, Keith Bannister and Pete Hawkins – a well balanced squad of two-lefties and two-righties.

Second, on countback, on 114 were Glenn Mann, Martyn and Nigel Cook and Steve Paddon, just pipping the 114 of Bill Guthrie, Pat Coyne, Nigel Larkin and Bill Shelley.

The Maldon Seniors’ section entertained their visitors from Colne Valley Golf Club for a friendly match while the previous week they played their qualifier for the Tony Stevenson Trophy.

This was won by Tony Broom with 35 points, on countback from Mike Worden, while Chris Pratt was third with 33.
