EIGHT qualifiers from the Burnham on Crouch Veterans’ Arthur West Winter League played the final round of the Champions League with several in with a chance of topping the table.

Don Edwards, who had been the leader for much of the previous four rounds, faltered in the last and was pushed into second place by David Frost, who playing off his 13 handicap and came in with a magnificent 40 stableford points to take maximum league points and win the trophy.

The Mixed Winter league came to its conclusion after 20 mixed pairs had played in four leagues throughout the winter.

It all came down to the last hole, after a very tight match, when Denise and Gordon Howat won on the 18th against Laura Whitman and Dan Munro.

The veterans played the March Stableford competition last week.

Result: 1 Ray Smith 35 pts ocb, 2 Don Edwards 35 pts.

Because of the high CSS both players were cut 0.3 which reduced their handicaps by one shot.

Saturday 36 men played the March Tankard getting round before the blustery winds came in resulting in two good rounds of golf.

Results: Division one: 1 Ron Stevens 65 nett, 2 Rob Atkins 70 nett ocb, 3 Matthew Fry 70 nett.

Division two: 1 Graham Davies 65 nett, 2 Steven Bray 70 nett, 3 Fred Banfield 71 nett.

The Jack Cooke Trophy (Handicaps 18 – 28) was played on Sunday but with wild winds and rain the field was much reduced and Steven Hitchens took top spot with 35 points.

The men’s friendly year kicked off on Saturday with the first leg of the annual Channels match.

On a very windy, but dry, afternoon Channels brought their best game to Burnham ensuring that Burnham will be defending only a two-hole lead at Channels later in the season.
