MEMBERS of Maldon Golf Club’s men’s section battled it out in round 14 of their Winter League.

The penultimate qualifier for this year was played in the tough format of a pairs aggregate stableford competition played off full handicap allowance on Sunday.

Winning this week with a fine score of 71 points were the pairing of Peter Harper and Peter Bibby, with a combined age alleged to total 159 years.

Second place went to vice-captain Terry Butcher and his partner Alan Syrett with 70 points.

Third with 69 points were Colin Gooday and George Watson, fourth on 68 were Keith Denny and Tim Hill, while fifth place went to Chris Purkiss and Peter Scanes on 67.

Club trustee Colin Gooday also won the nearest-the-pin prize with his second shot on the par four sixth/15th hole, while Immediate past captain Peter Hawkins won the corresponding prize on the par three fifth/14th hole.

With only one round remaining to be contested in this year’s winter league five pairs are still in with a chance of securing the title if results go their way, which should make for a really exciting finish this coming Sunday.

The Saturday afternoon swindle, played in teams of three with the best two scores to count on each hole, was won by the team of Martin Read, Dave Allen and Stuart Skriabin with 86 points.

Second were John Meakes, Paul Neale and Dave Poynton with 82, while Pete Hawkins, Garth Milford and Bill Guthrie took third place with 77.
