Burnham on Crouch Golf Club held their first Pro-Am for 17 years with the sun shining and, as usual, a breeze.

Twenty-three professionals joined with three other players to make teams of four, with the format for the day, off three-quarter handicap, a stableford with two from four to count.

The professionals also had an individual competition.

There were four hole-in-one prizes of a car, two holidays and a set of irons but no one managed that feat on the day.

RESULTS: Professional Competition: 1 Steve Cipa (South Essex Golf Centre) 66, =2nd Mark Stokes (Rayleigh Driving Range) and James Webber (Three Rivers Golf and Country Club) 71.

Amateur nearest the pin: 5th: Jillean Hipsey; 8th: Jack Lamb; 11th: Martin Johnson; 15th: David Frost.

There was a good field for the Ladies’ Spring Lunch with 26 ladies playing the 18-hole competition and 11 playing the nine hole.

Results: 18 hole:1 Viv Locke 36 pts, 2 Heather Sullivan 34 pts, 3 Sue Frost 32 pts.

Nine-hole: 1 Karen Hull 15 pts, 2 Edna Watts 13 pts.

The Seniors team, in preparation for the new season, played a friendly against reigning champions Chelmsford at home last Thursday and won 8½ to 5½.

The men also started off their season on Saturday with The Grouse Foursomes.

Seventy-two players were ready for a shotgun start at 8.30am on a sunny morning but with a very strong southerly wind.

Results: 1 Will Davey and Simon Orin nett 67.5, 2 Mickey Leonard and Bob Morris nett 72, 3 Martin Johnson and Alan Glass nett 73.5 ocb, 4 Dick Seabright and John Halley nettt 73.5.

Winter league: semi-final: Simon Vidgeon and George Grimes (42) beat AJ and Ryan Davies (36), Matty and Rob Hawksworth (41) beat Don Vidgeon and Tom Cecil (33).
