WE have lost a lot of trips recently but when the weather has allowed us to get out the fishing has been excellent.

There are good numbers of cod showing up inshore and offshore, most average 2-3lb with a good showing of 4lb fish.

These fish are all feeding on crab on the seabed as most of the sprats have now gone, making it much easier to catch them.

The best baits are squid and lug.

There are a few nice whiting starting to show with several fish up to 1lb or so, these bigger fish like a straight lug bait tipped with a bit of mackerel.

The thornbacks are starting to show up.

These fish moved off for a few weeks when the water temperature dropped but are now starting to show again with some of the smaller males coming inshore with the females.

The best baits are anything fishy like squid, mackerel, herring, sandeel.

These fish will thicken up on the ground quite quick as there is very little commercial quota for them.

The piers and shore marks are starting to produce codling and whiting again after a hard few weeks.

The estuaries will also see a marked improvement with codling and whiting and thornbacks.

Prospects are superb with a good mix of fish around for the next few weeks until the codling move off.
