ALI Carter is determined to get back to his best after returning to top-class snooker.

The Colchester-born potter, diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year and forced to go through punishing sessions of chemotherapy, was given a standing ovation when he took centre stage against Neil Robertson at the Champion of Champions event.

Although he lost 4-0, Carter reflected on the positives and said he is already looking forward to the UK Championship – one of the sport’s flagship competitions and a full ranking event, starting in York on November 25.

“I’ve got a bit of catching up to do, but I’m not worried about that,” said the 35-year-old, who grew up in Tiptree.

“When I was first diagnosed I thought I was going to die.

“Snooker was far from my mind.

“But I’m looking forward to getting back to my best.”

Carter made a sensational comeback after winning the General Cup, in Hong Kong.

However, this was his first major competition, in front of the TV cameras, and his first appearance back in the UK.

He was given a rousing reception when introduced to the crowd at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, on Friday afternoon.

Robertson proved too strong, though, and breaks of 111 and 106 helped the Australian wrap up a convincing 4-0 victory.
