MALDON’S win against visiting Haverhill has given them breathing space from the relegation zone.

Home skipper Martyn Coker said: “We hosted Haverhill knowing that a win would virtually put us on the verge of staying up against one of our relegation rivals.

“Jamie Glenn (5-39) and Toby Pugh (3-61) both bowled 16 overs and controlled the innings well.

“They were supported by some outstanding work behind the stumps from Jimmy Ainscough, including a superb one-handed catch down the legside for Jamie’s fifth wicket.

“When we batted Chris Harris led the reply initially with 41 runs off 41 balls, before Glenn took centre stage, smashing an unbetean 96 off 60 balls.

“With Ainscough adding support, we raced to our target within 22 overs.

“Jamie’s all-round contribution this season has been huge, and his success with the ball has been especially pleasing after struggling to take wickets in his first two seasons with us.

“The results left our visitors only taking three bonus points away, and extending our lead over them to 33 points.

“With Witham 26 points behind us also, and only three matches remaining, our position in division one for 2015 is looking more secure than at any point this season.

“A fourth consecutive win this week at Mildenhall could secure our place.”
