The Ryman League season’s opening day saw mixed results for local sides.

Witham Town made their debut in the premier division and earned their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw against Lewes.

After a goal-less first half, the visitors opened the scoring on 68 minutes through Luke Blewden.

But Witham earned themselves a share of the spoils on 75 minutes when Lewis Godbold equalised.

In division one north, Brightlingsea made their debut in the league.

Regent began their Ryman adventure with a 2-1 defeat at Tilbury.

Brightlingsea fell behind after three minutes but the visitors drew level after a great strike from Ricky Griggs, after beating three players, on 20 minutes.

But Tilbury snatched all three points in the 70th minute to win the match.

Maldon and Tiptree opened their season with a 2-2 draw against visiting Cheshunt.

The home side opened the scoring on 52 minutes through Jack Stevenson.

But three minutes later the visitors were level when Allen Bossman made it 1-1.

It wasn’t long before the Jammers regained the lead when Joe Pearman put them 2-1 ahead on 59 minutes.

Cheshunt gained a share of the spoils, however, after an own goal from Tommy Spillane on 82 minutes.

Heybridge Swifts had a disappointing opening day at Soham Town Rangers, losing 3-1.

Joey Abbs opened the scoring for the home side on 17 minutes.

But Rick Spriggs put the home side back on level terms two minutes later.

But Soham retook the lead just before half-time when Luke Stanley made it 2-1.

Soham wrapped the game up in injury-time when Abbs made it 3-1.
