Wilson can't wait for Burnham Ramblers' season to end

The Leslie Field outfit have suffered a string of bad results over recent months which has seen them drop down the Ryman League division one north table.

Despite a 2-1 win over Wroxham on Saturday, Ramblers were beaten 4-1 at home on Easter Monday by visiting Aveley.

And this latest defeat has left Wilson and his side desperate for the season to come to a close.

Billy Hunt saved Burnham’s blushes in injury-time on Saturday, after the home side had equalised on 90 minutes, following a Terry Griffith’s shot, by the way of a defender’s thigh, giving them the lead 13 minutes into the second half.

On Monday, the Ramblers only had a Bradley Nobbs penalty to show for their efforts.

Wilson said: “I think we got out of jail against Wroxham.

“And on Monday I thought we did well in the first half and then pressed the self-destruct button.

“They turned up with a centre-half in goal and we just couldn’t get it together.”

Wilson believes that their first season in the Ryman League has seen a step up in pressure from the Essex Senior League.

With one game left, away at Dereham Town, he is relishing a break from the game.

He said: “I can’t wait for 5pm on Saturday and for it all to be over.

“Myself and the players are physically and mentally shattered.

“It’s on my mind 24-seven, especially with the number of games we’ve lost in the last couple of months.

“My players are used to playing about 46 games a season, up in the Ryman with cup games and everything we have played 60 games.

“The bad weather bringing all the games together hasn’t helped, either.

“It’s eventually caught up with us in the last two to three months.

“The results have shown we have not been good enough.

“I have to take the blame for that, I’d take the plaudits when we win.”

Wilson, however, is not going to make any rash decisions about his future.

He said: “I have to speak to the powers at be at the club and see if they want to have me here next season.

“But I have some questions for them as well as to what is going to be in place for next season.

“We lost key players this season, the spine of the team and that showed with the results. If we don’t get them back or improve we will go down.”

Wilson knows that the team must be bolstered for next season.

He said: “As good a bunch of lads as they are, and as honest as they are, they’re not good enough for this level.

“We are getting beat every week and there is no enjoyment in that.

“And we play for enjoyment because there is no financial reward.

“There is no point in making rash decisions, I am going to sit down and think about it.

“I am not asking the players in for training this week and then see what happens on Saturday.

“I got the team up, I don’t want to take them down.

“The only positive at the moment is there is only one game to go.”
