PROLIFIC Heybridge Swifts striker Michael Cheek is on the verge of joining Chelmsford City.

He will join up with the Clarets, managed by former Swifts boss Mark Hawkes.

Heybridge manager Jody Brown confirmed the news and added that, barring “a miraculous turnaround” Cheek was going to say his goodbyes.

Brown said: “Michael is due to join Chelmsford.

“Chelmsford have told him he’ll be a key player for them and that he’ll play up front with (former Heybridge striker) Luke Callander.

“If that’s the case, I’ve told him he’s got to take the opportunity.

“As I’ve said many times before, I’d never stand in a player’s way of moving up a level.

“Chelmsford are a big club and this is a big chance for him.

“It’s a pity because I’d have loved to have kept him.

“He’s still very raw but has so much potential.

“I’m disappointed to lose him but I understand his reasons for wanting to take this opportunity.

“I hope it works out for him, but I’ve told him that if it doesn’t the door will still be open for him here.”

Swifts go to Needham Market on Saturday before hosting Romford on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the club have a new date for their postponed home fixture against Dereham Town.

It will now take place on Tuesday, January 14.
