Maldon and Tiptree lose out in FA Trophy
5:36pm Saturday 19th October 2013 in Local Sport
Maldon and Tiptree’s run in the FA Trophy came to end against visiting Maidstone United.
The home side lost out 3-1 at Park Drive in a competitive first qualifying round match.
The game started evenly as both sides looked to open the scoring.
Maldon’s Jacob cleaver went close with a header early on and this signalled a period of intense pressure from the home side.
Michael Toner then had a shot saved as the visiting keeper pushed his effort wide.
Then Tommy Spillane went close with two efforts, one deflected wide and then another off the line.
Maldon’s pressure finally paid off when Chris Bryan scored the opener.
A long ball was flicked on and Bryan ran around the back of the defence to fire past the keeper on 33 minutes.
Maldon took their 1-0 lead into half-time, however, three minutes after the break Maidstone were back on level terms.
Worse was to follow for Maldon as they were reduced to ten men when Joe Gardner was sent off on 55 minutes.
Keeper Jason Willis made a great save to stop Maidstone going in front.
However, the visitors’ extra man paid off on 80 minutes when Maidstone took the lead.
Seven minutes later the visitors made the game safe when they made it 3-1.
